Autumn Data School - Citizen Science Workshop

Online
00:00
De 15 Nov até 15 Nov, 2023
Historical biodiversity documents comprise an important link to the long-term data life cycle and provide useful insights into several aspects of biodiversity research and management. By rescuing historical data, we better understand the ocean’s past, and we are able to predict the future of ocean life. Participants to the workshop will be introduced to scientific practices and concepts such as the workflow for a citizen science project, the data standardization process, and the (meta)data curation. In particular, in the morning session there will be the presentation of the LifeWatch Citizen Science Platform and the introduction to Zooniverse and Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL), while the evening session will be dedicated to the setting up of participant’s Citizen Science projects through Zooniverse. * Note that all data generated from this workshop will be made available through EMODnet Biology and due to established data flows, in OBIS and GBIF as well. Participants are welcome to bring with them scanned logsheets from cruises they have participated, but in the absence of enough resources, the organising team can make documents available for the project creation in the citizen science platforms. There is an enormous amount of (meta)data waiting to become FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable), and citizen science data rescue is a promising resource towards this end. If you are interested in participating, either online or in presence, you can register at the link.

The webinar, How to make the best of citizen science for your research, is part of the MCAA Around the World Webinar Series and it has been created within the European Citizen Science (ECS) project, thanks to a collaboration between the Marie Curie Alumni Association and the Université Paris Cité/Learning Planet Institute. Experts on citizen science and young researchers will guide you along the implementation process and introduce the European Citizen Science Academy, one of the resources of the European Citizen Science project.

Creative Design Competition for Citizen Science

Online

De 07 Nov até 30 Nov, 2023
The European Citizen Science Association (ECSA) is thrilled to announce our first competition,”Illustrate & Innovate”, where illustrators, graphic designers and artists from around the world are invited to create icons for each of the 10 Principles of Citizen Science. This exciting challenge will give you the opportunity to design the icons for ECSA and be awarded 1000 € for the completion of the assignment. Interested creatives can apply by sending us your icon designs for principles 2, 4 and 6, taking into account our ECSA visual identity as well as a written design concept for the remaining icons (no longer than one page total). We are looking forward to receiving many unique design submissions!

Co-CiPhil: Co-creating Environmental Citizen Science Capacity in the Philippines

Cagayan de Oro City (Filipinas)

De 06 Nov até 17 Nov, 2023
The MSU – Iligan Institute of Technology is currently hosting the Co-CiPhil: Co-creating Environmental Citizen Science Capacity in the Philippines VLIR-UOS International Training Program (ITP) Workshop 2, taking place from November 6 to 17, 2023, at the Chali Beach Resort and Conference Center in Cagayan de Oro City. This two-week workshop, attended by 50 scholars representing various local and international state universities, as well as local government units and medical institutions, is part of a series of workshops on quantitative and qualitative methodologies in citizen science research. These workshops are collaboratively organized by Universiteit Hasselt (UHasselt), a prestigious Flemish university in Belgium, MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), and the Visayas State University (VSU). The primary objective of the International Training Program (ITP) is to systematically incorporate global perspectives, fostering a supportive, inclusive, and networked learning environment. Through these programs, professionals enhance their transversal skills and gain state-of-the-art knowledge in sustainable development, transforming into globally aware citizens capable of driving positive change within their networks. During the first week, the workshop delves into environmental monitoring and management (Course 3) under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Natalie Beenaerts from UHasselt. Emphasis is placed on the significance of co-creating citizen science or community-based research, with a specific focus on empowering women and other marginalized groups. In the subsequent week, Prof. Dr. Thomas Neyens from UHasselt leads discussions on establishing robust study designs, particularly in the context of observational studies and citizen science initiatives. The curriculum covers the foundational aspects of statistical study design, while also addressing practical considerations in less-than-ideal settings.
