Belgian Citizen Science Inspiration and Networking Event 2024

Mechelen, Bélgica

De 12 Set até 12 Set, 2024
On September 12, Scivil organizes a Citizen Science Inspiration and Networking Day which will take place at Lamot in Mechelen. This year, we are organising the networking day in collaboration with FARO, Histories, and the AfricaMuseum. Similar to the previous edition, you can expect an inspiring opening panel, a series of interesting talks and workshops covering various aspects of citizen science, and a pleasant networking lunch, this time with a poster session. We offer many fascinating citizen science sessions on themes such as working with the media, inclusion and diversity, how to start with citizen science, and practical examples from health research and social sciences. This edition we also put an extra spotlight on the heritage sector. Within heritage there is a long tradition of collaboration with volunteers, whether or not in the form of citizen science. Through the collaboration with FARO, Histories and the AfricaMuseum, we want to ensure inspiring cross-pollination between citizen science and heritage. Sessions take place in Dutch and English. The programme offers sessions for beginners in citizen science as well as for experienced initiators looking for more depth. Participation is free. Are you registered, but can't come? Let us know as soon as possible and avoid a no-show fee (50 EUR).

ISEED Final Conference in Brussels

Bruxelas, Bélgica

De 11 Jun até 12 Jun, 2024
ISEED members will meet for our Final Conference in Brussels, Belgium. The event will happen on the 11th and 12th of June 2024, sharing our research outcomes, also with a broader public and relevant stakeholders. We answer some questions about this important event. What will be done at the event? The ISEED final conference will review and invite reflection on the achievements of the ISEED project. We have been working to understand the challenges of polarisation, disaffection and exclusion that affect European democracies today, and how and whether public inclusion in science-based knowledge discussion and development can foster participation and collaboration in Europe. The conference will collect and present our key research outputs, innovative technical tools, our case-study outcomes, and share insights from our multi-stakeholder workshops. A special part of the programme will be devoted to the recommendations shared in our policy brief series. What are the preparations for the event? The programme for the two days is under development but expect a discussion of the citizen science initiatives we have been following as well as deep philosophical conversations around what it is to foster inclusive participation in European democracies today. The meeting will take place at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) Brussels meeting space. What to expect from the event? Expect an engaged and multifaceted discussion of how citizen science can support and in turn be supported by participatory democracies in Europe. Stay tuned and follow up on what the event will bring!

Seagrass monitoring at Wave Break Island 1+2

Wave Break Island (Australia)

De 22 Mar até 22 Mar, 2024
Join our Ocean Connect marine science team on their fortnightly seagrass survey to actively monitor the status and trends in seagrass conditions around the Gold Coast. This event will be held at Wave Break Island, we will be meeting at the Marine Parade to board a small vessel to travel to Wavebreak island seagrass meadows. Seagrasses are a habitat forming species and they play a critical role in the equilibrium of coastal ecosystems. They provide many key ecosystem services, such as providing a nursery and habitat for animals, preventing coastal erosion and sequestering a large amount of carbon dioxide. 7 species occur in the Gold Coast region and cover an estimated 22% of the Broadwater. It is crucial to monitor these change in order to be able to mitigate widespread loss . Ultimately by protecting the seagrass meadows the wider Gold Coast community will indirectly benefit from the sustained water quality in the Gold Coast Broadwater and surrounding region, ultimately, enhancing recreational fishing, marine tourism and providing the right framework for future generations to enjoy. Participants will be trained in internationally standardized and recognized Seagrass-Watch training and will be briefed on seagrasses ecology, importance and threats before the session. The ongoing monitoring is supported by the City of Gold Coast Catchment and Citizen Science Grant program. This workshop is only suitable for adults over the 16 years of age in order to maintain scientific rigor and safety. This is an outdoor event. Everyone attending must register as spots are limited.
