ISEED Final Conference in Brussels
Bruxelas, BélgicaDe 11 Jun até 12 Jun, 2024
ISEED members will meet for our Final Conference in Brussels, Belgium. The event will happen on the 11th and 12th of June 2024, sharing our research outcomes, also with a broader public and relevant stakeholders. We answer some questions about this important event.
What will be done at the event?
The ISEED final conference will review and invite reflection on the achievements of the ISEED project. We have been working to understand the challenges of polarisation, disaffection and exclusion that affect European democracies today, and how and whether public inclusion in science-based knowledge discussion and development can foster participation and collaboration in Europe.
The conference will collect and present our key research outputs, innovative technical tools, our case-study outcomes, and share insights from our multi-stakeholder workshops. A special part of the programme will be devoted to the recommendations shared in our policy brief series.
What are the preparations for the event?
The programme for the two days is under development but expect a discussion of the citizen science initiatives we have been following as well as deep philosophical conversations around what it is to foster inclusive participation in European democracies today. The meeting will take place at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) Brussels meeting space.
What to expect from the event?
Expect an engaged and multifaceted discussion of how citizen science can support and in turn be supported by participatory democracies in Europe.
Stay tuned and follow up on what the event will bring!
PhD Studentship: Safe listening in music venues: scalable technologies for citizen science and knowledge building
Nottingham, UKDe 19 Mar até 01 Abr, 2024
This studentship is funded by the NIHR (National Institute of Health and Care Research) Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre. The studentship will cover home University rates which includes a stipend of £18,622 per annum and tuition fees. UK/Home students only.
Project description: Loud sound has the capacity to excite and injure in equal measure. Through projects such as the World Health Organization’s ‘Make Listening Safe’ initiative, the Audio Engineering Society’s ‘Healthy Ears, Limited Annoyance (HeLa) programme, and the Night Time Industries Association’s ‘Listen for Life’ campaign, there is growing awareness of the need for the professional audio industry to take a pro-active approach to protect audience members’ hearing.
Join a dynamic, multi-disciplinary team, that includes lead contributors to some of the above-mentioned projects, to conduct groundbreaking PhD research into how live sound can be made simultaneously safer and better quality, to the benefit of audiences in Nottingham and beyond.
As a PhD candidate, you will be involved in setting up long-term sound monitoring systems in local venues, developing a smartphone app that will allow venue goers to contribute their experience of sound quality and hearing symptoms for research, and using data science techniques to improve our understanding of how the details of the sound exposure influence hearing-injury risk and perceived sound quality.
We seek highly motivated candidates with a first-class or upper 2.1 honours degree (or equivalent), or an MSc/MA, in audio engineering, acoustics, audiology, computer science, or a relevant scientific discipline. Research experience in hearing, psychology, or a related field will be advantageous, as will demonstrable skills in programming, data science, or app development.
Open call: STARTS Prize Africa
AfricaDe 18 Jan até 01 Mar, 2024

An initiative of the European Commission, STARTS is designed to foster alliances of science, technology and artistic practice. The focus is on people and projects that contribute to mastering the social, ecological and economic challenges.
The STARTS Prize Africa will highlight and award regional best practices in the field through the launch of the African edition of the well-known STARTS Prize. The STARTS Prize has been a major contributor in building the foundations of a community interlinking artists, companies, scientists, researchers and businesses. This movement will now be enhanced with the first edition of the STARTS Prize Africa. The STARTS Prize Africa is not restricted to a particular genre or field. The competition is open to all forms of creative practices, be it music, performing and visual arts, film, animation, gaming, photography, VR and XR, design, fashion, architecture, journalism, art-science collaborations, citizen science initiatives, human-centred AI projects, social software, and many more.

Co-CiPhil: Co-creating Environmental Citizen Science Capacity in the Philippines
Cagayan de Oro City (Filipinas)De 06 Nov até 17 Nov, 2023
The MSU – Iligan Institute of Technology is currently hosting the Co-CiPhil: Co-creating Environmental Citizen Science Capacity in the Philippines VLIR-UOS International Training Program (ITP) Workshop 2, taking place from November 6 to 17, 2023, at the Chali Beach Resort and Conference Center in Cagayan de Oro City. This two-week workshop, attended by 50 scholars representing various local and international state universities, as well as local government units and medical institutions, is part of a series of workshops on quantitative and qualitative methodologies in citizen science research. These workshops are collaboratively organized by Universiteit Hasselt (UHasselt), a prestigious Flemish university in Belgium, MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), and the Visayas State University (VSU). The primary objective of the International Training Program (ITP) is to systematically incorporate global perspectives, fostering a supportive, inclusive, and networked learning environment. Through these programs, professionals enhance their transversal skills and gain state-of-the-art knowledge in sustainable development, transforming into globally aware citizens capable of driving positive change within their networks.
During the first week, the workshop delves into environmental monitoring and management (Course 3) under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Natalie Beenaerts from UHasselt. Emphasis is placed on the significance of co-creating citizen science or community-based research, with a specific focus on empowering women and other marginalized groups. In the subsequent week, Prof. Dr. Thomas Neyens from UHasselt leads discussions on establishing robust study designs, particularly in the context of observational studies and citizen science initiatives. The curriculum covers the foundational aspects of statistical study design, while also addressing practical considerations in less-than-ideal settings.
