Postdoctoral Researcher Position on Citizen Science and Public Trust in Science

Postdoctoral Researcher Position on Citizen Science and Public Trust in Science
How can citizen science increase public trust in science and foster equity in the research system? The Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) of Leiden University has an opening for a postdoc researcher (0,8 fte) for 24 months to carry out a research project funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO) under its OS-NL Research on Open Science funding instrument. While earlier research about this topic has addressed the people actively participating in citizen science (CS) projects, we will investigate the perceptions and perspectives of citizens, researchers and policy makers who do not directly involved in such projects. The project will study four CS projects in the domain of environmental science, using a survey, individual interviews, and focus group interviews.
What you will do
The purpose of this position is to conduct original research about how CS relates to public trust and to equitable research practices in environmental science, by exploring how the involvement of citizens in scientific research influences trust of other people, with special attention to those who historically experience a large psychological distance to science.
2026 Conference for Advancing the Participatory Sciences

This online conference brings together researchers, facilitators, and project and community leaders for four exciting days of inspiration.
Our event highlights leading voices within the participatory sciences and facilitates dynamic discussions. With an online format, you’ll connect with a broad range of people and perspectives that won’t be convened anywhere else.
Navigating Platforms for Participatory Sciences
Online17:00
De 11 Dez até 11 Dez, 2025
Curious about platform features? Want to hear what’s new?
No matter where you are in your project’s lifecycle and whether you are on a custom or shared platform, this conversation with platform developers will give you insights, ideas, or inspiration for your project’s next steps.
In this webinar, we walk you through some key considerations for choosing the right platform and hear from the six most commonly used web platforms for data collection/classification supporting participatory science projects in North America: CitSci.org; Zooniverse; FieldScope; Anecdata; iNaturalist; and GLOBE Observer. While we spend some time on platform features and updates, we will focus our program on a discussion of the kinds of research and participant experiences best supported by each.
Webinar Series: Teaching with EMERGE & GLOBE Mission Mosquito
OnlineDe 17 Set até 24 Set, 2025
This free two-part webinar is designed for educators who want to bring coding and citizen science to their learners.
The series bridges GLOBE Mission Mosquito—a NASA-supported program where students and community members collect environmental data—with EMERGE, a Florida-based but widely adaptable project that turns those data into insights about mosquito-borne disease risk.
Session 1 (Sept 17 at 6 PM ET): Introduction to EMERGE and GLOBE. You’ll learn how students can collect mosquito habitat and land cover data with the free GLOBE Observer app, then complete a guided coding assignment to visualize those observations on maps and explore connections with NASA satellite data. Very friendly environment for people who haven't coded before!
Session 2 (Sept 24 at 6 PM ET): We’ll regroup to review the coding assignment—troubleshoot issues, share sample outputs, and discuss strategies for adapting the lesson in classrooms, afterschool programs, and libraries.

Birds Georgia at Manuel's Tavern: From Citizen Science to Data Activism with Ashley Boone
Atlanta, USADe 24 Ago até 24 Ago, 2025
Free to attend but registration is requested at the link below
Community and citizen science initiatives generate vast amounts of data with the potential to inform scientific research, environmental management, and policy decisions. Yet, the pathway from data collection to concrete civic action is often fragmented or unclear. In this presentation, we will examine how grassroots data efforts such as monitoring bird-building collisions or tracking biodiversity loss can be strategically leveraged to support advocacy, shape local policies, and promote environmental justice. Drawing on case studies from Atlanta-based citizen science projects, we’ll discuss challenges and opportunities for transforming community-generated data into a catalyst for meaningful, place-based change.
About Ashley: Ashley Boone is a PhD student in Human-Centered Computing at Georgia Tech, where her research focuses on how community-based organizations and nonprofits use data as a tool for advocacy and environmental action. Her work sits at the intersection of data science, civic engagement, and environmental stewardship, with a particular interest in community science projects that advance both public participation and policy impact. Ashley has collaborated with several citizen science initiatives in Atlanta, including Project Safe Flight, which works to reduce bird-building collisions through data collection and advocacy.
