Citizen Science as a Path for Sustaining Healthy Waterbodies
Abstract: Lakes, streams & wetlands are widely ignored by scientists, the public, and decision-makers. Yet, like the smallest blood vessels of an organism’s body, these headwaters are critically important for the healthy functioning and structuring of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Climate change, land use intensification, and water withdrawals create a perfect storm for fragmenting and degrading those small waters—despite their importance to unique, endemic biota and for providing ecosystem services to humans (e.g., flood, drought, & disease mitigation, fisheries, wildlife viewing). It is critically important for scientists to engage not only other scientists—but the public as well. We must assist public school students and teachers in monitoring and assessing water quality and biota, including discussing the results with local decision-makers (private companies and local governments). Engaging school youths is a seed for citizen-science growth and effectiveness. Simplified quantitative field protocols and GoPro filming of reference & impaired streams provide pertinent and appropriate information for communicating with decision-makers. Engaging citizen groups regarding the human health and economic benefits of stream rehabilitation provides information on the ecosystem services offered by healthy streams and riparian communities. With the assistance of our coauthors, we will present global research examples of the values and threats to those aquatic ecosystems together with alternatives for communicating that information to the public and decision-makers.
Citizen Science EcoAction Day
Crandon Park, Miami (EUA)09:30
De 09 Dez até 09 Dez, 2023
Jon Miami EcoAdventures & local non-profit Debris Free Oceans for our monthly Citizen Science project activity, hosted at Crandon Park every 2nd Saturday. Citizen Science is a way for the general public to be directly involved in the process of scientific data collection and to be engaged in scientific thinking. The goal of this activity is to have volunteers become amateur scientists while working with a group of professional scientists to collect critical data on marine debris in our local environment.
Responsibilities and Duties: • Cleaning up the beach. • Sorting marine debris collected • Gathering and recording data.
Qualifications: Volunteers under 13 must participate with a parent/guardian present. Please brIng a refillable water bottle, closed-toed shoes, and protection from the sun (sunscreen, hats, sunglasses).
Collaborative design of educational and urban spaces
Coimbra (Portugal)11:00
This is the 4th workshop organised by CC.EDU | Working Group on Citizen Science and Education under the Series 'Building Educational Communities'
Unmasking citizenwashing: the dos and don’ts of participation
Bruxelas (Bélgica) e Online10:00
De 14 Nov até 14 Nov, 2023
The discussion will focus on combining the input of experts in public participation with the voices and recommendations of civil society. The symposium will help to identify the main characteristics of citizenwashing and explore its various forms and manifestations. Both large-scale aspects and more granular examples will be examined, with the help of activists who often bear the brunt of countering citizenwashing claims. This symposium will also facilitate discussion on effective strategies and solutions to combat citizenwashing and ensure meaningful public participation. The event will be followed up with conclusions and recommendations collected throughout the discussions.
Target group: The symposium will bring together experts in political science, academics and researchers, European CSOs, environmental NGOs and policymakers.
Come and discuss this topic with us!
The symposium will be held in a hybrid format with EN-FR interpretation.
Co-CiPhil: Co-creating Environmental Citizen Science Capacity in the Philippines
Cagayan de Oro City (Filipinas)De 06 Nov até 17 Nov, 2023
The MSU – Iligan Institute of Technology is currently hosting the Co-CiPhil: Co-creating Environmental Citizen Science Capacity in the Philippines VLIR-UOS International Training Program (ITP) Workshop 2, taking place from November 6 to 17, 2023, at the Chali Beach Resort and Conference Center in Cagayan de Oro City. This two-week workshop, attended by 50 scholars representing various local and international state universities, as well as local government units and medical institutions, is part of a series of workshops on quantitative and qualitative methodologies in citizen science research. These workshops are collaboratively organized by Universiteit Hasselt (UHasselt), a prestigious Flemish university in Belgium, MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), and the Visayas State University (VSU). The primary objective of the International Training Program (ITP) is to systematically incorporate global perspectives, fostering a supportive, inclusive, and networked learning environment. Through these programs, professionals enhance their transversal skills and gain state-of-the-art knowledge in sustainable development, transforming into globally aware citizens capable of driving positive change within their networks.
During the first week, the workshop delves into environmental monitoring and management (Course 3) under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Natalie Beenaerts from UHasselt. Emphasis is placed on the significance of co-creating citizen science or community-based research, with a specific focus on empowering women and other marginalized groups. In the subsequent week, Prof. Dr. Thomas Neyens from UHasselt leads discussions on establishing robust study designs, particularly in the context of observational studies and citizen science initiatives. The curriculum covers the foundational aspects of statistical study design, while also addressing practical considerations in less-than-ideal settings.
