The CS4Water Conference 2027: Call for contributions

From 29 June to 1 July 2027, the CCS4Water Conference 2027 will be heading to the Emeris Newlands Campus in Cape Town, South Africa, for its second edition and its first in Africa. The conference aims to bring together researchers, practitioners, policymakers, educators, community members, and citizen scientists to strengthen the role of citizen science in how water is monitored, managed, and governed.
We are pleased to share that the call for contributions will open on 31 October 2026.
Submissions will be accepted from 31 October to 14 December 2026.

Southern Africa has become one of the most active regions in the world for citizen science in water and the CS4Water Conference 2027 brings that momentum onto the international stage! Delegates can look forward to sharing, engaging, and exploring the state of the art in citizen science for freshwater.
Across diverse platforms, the conference will focus on Global South practices in citizen science for water, digital innovation and AI in citizen science freshwater monitoring, and freshwater-focused citizen science for education, governance, capacity building for youth, climate resilience, water security, and strengthening North-South collaboration on water 👥🌊📱🔬🌍
The conference promises to drive progress for people and water, all within the dynamic connecting environment that made the inaugural 2025 conference in Delft a success 🤝

World Water Monitoring Day

World Water Monitoring Day calls for collective responsibility in protecting water resources. It promotes citizen science, empowering individuals, communities, and schools to actively participate in monitoring rivers, dams, wetlands, and estuaries.
The programme will include interactive demonstrations of water monitoring tools, educational talks, and a hands-on river clean-up. Learners from Mzamo and Shumang Primary Schools, and Emadwaleni Secondary School will join community members, researchers, businesses, and civil society in collective action to safeguard our shared water resources.
Belgian Citizen Science Inspiration and Networking Event 2024

On September 12, Scivil organizes a Citizen Science Inspiration and Networking Day which will take place at Lamot in Mechelen. This year, we are organising the networking day in collaboration with FARO, Histories, and the AfricaMuseum. Similar to the previous edition, you can expect an inspiring opening panel, a series of interesting talks and workshops covering various aspects of citizen science, and a pleasant networking lunch, this time with a poster session. We offer many fascinating citizen science sessions on themes such as working with the media, inclusion and diversity, how to start with citizen science, and practical examples from health research and social sciences. This edition we also put an extra spotlight on the heritage sector. Within heritage there is a long tradition of collaboration with volunteers, whether or not in the form of citizen science. Through the collaboration with FARO, Histories and the AfricaMuseum, we want to ensure inspiring cross-pollination between citizen science and heritage.
Sessions take place in Dutch and English. The programme offers sessions for beginners in citizen science as well as for experienced initiators looking for more depth.
Participation is free. Are you registered, but can't come? Let us know as soon as possible and avoid a no-show fee (50 EUR).

Open call: STARTS Prize Africa

Science, Technology, and the ARTS (STARTS) is inviting African artists, companies, scientists, researchers and businesses to participate in the first edition of its Prize Africa competition in Linz, Austria. An initiative of the European Commission, STARTS is designed to foster alliances of science, technology and artistic practice. The focus is on people and projects that contribute to mastering the social, ecological and economic challenges.
The STARTS Prize Africa will highlight and award regional best practices in the field through the launch of the African edition of the well-known STARTS Prize. The STARTS Prize has been a major contributor in building the foundations of a community interlinking artists, companies, scientists, researchers and businesses. This movement will now be enhanced with the first edition of the STARTS Prize Africa. The STARTS Prize Africa is not restricted to a particular genre or field. The competition is open to all forms of creative practices, be it music, performing and visual arts, film, animation, gaming, photography, VR and XR, design, fashion, architecture, journalism, art-science collaborations, citizen science initiatives, human-centred AI projects, social software, and many more.
The competition is open to citizens and residents of all African countries, as well as legal entities registered on the continent.
