Bird species have always expanded and contracted their ranges in a dynamic fashion. This is normal, but nowadays they are occurring at an alarming rate.

Human causes such as habitat transformation and global climate change appear to be the leading causes in avian range expansions. When food, nesting, and potential mates become scarce in a particular area, birds move out of those areas to find new resources.

A species expanding its range can affect the populations of the resident species elsewhere.

This project’s goal is to monitor what appears to be an ongoing range expansion in a set of resident and migratory birds occurring in Peru. The base, or reference ranges, for these species are the range maps created by the authors of Birds of Peru in 2007. Each species in peruaves.org has a base range map.

The documented range or base range (used for each species in peruaves.org or in the Birds of Peru Guide of Schulenberg et al) is included to visualize a species’ range expansion.

It is recommended that the records provided in the forms meet the following conditions.

  • The species was observed outside its documented range in peruaves.org or Birds of Peru by Schulenberg et al.
  • The observation is not of escaped birds or incidental vagrants that do not indicate a range expansion.
  • The observation is documented with a photo and a description with additional information, or, failing that, it is part of a scientific publication.
  • In case the documentation is not available online, the author is willing to provide it by other means.

This Project depends on field observations provided by the community of bird enthusiasts.
