The RESPIRA Air Quality Monitoring (RESPIRA-AQM) project aims to build Nakuru’s resilience against the impacts of climate change by integrating advanced technology with community-driven environmental monitoring. This initiative aligns closely with Nakuru’s municipal climate regulations, Kenya’s national climate action frameworks, and global sustainable development strategies, positioning the city at the forefront of climate adaptation.

Our approach is rooted in strong partnerships that unite the expertise of local and international specialists. The team comprises data scientists, anthropologists, and citizen science experts from KU Leuven in Belgium, working hand-in-hand with environmental scientists from Kenya’s Egerton University. Additionally, we collaborate extensively with local organizations such as Sensors.Africa, a Kenyan initiative by Code for Africa dedicated to community-based environmental monitoring, the Kenya Meteorological Department, and Belgian professionals specializing in community engagement and data visualization. This diverse partnership ensures the project remains deeply embedded in local realities while benefiting from cutting-edge international knowledge and technology.

How to participate

AngaWATCH invites you to observe and share your insights about the air around you. As part of the RESPIRA-Air Quality Monitoring (AQM) initiative, we collaborate with the Nakuru Meteorological Department (KMD) and local residents to track air pollution, identify pollution hotspots, and assess health impacts. By participating, you contribute to a growing database of air quality data, helping to drive meaningful change and inform policies that improve environmental and public health.
