Community monitoring of natural resource system and the environment – Law meets science

Citizen Science as a Path for Sustaining Healthy Waterbodies

O prazo para submissão de resumos é 22 de dezembro de 2023. É com grande satisfação que convidamos a todos e todas a participarem do 37º Congresso da Sociedade Internacional de Limnologia (SIL), que ocorrerá em Foz do Iguaçu, entre os dias 5 e 9 de maio de 2024.
Neste Congresso haverá uma sessão temática “Citizen Science as a Path for Sustaining Healthy Waterbodies” que pode ser um ótimo momento de discussão
sobre as ações de ciência cidadã em nossos ecossistemas aquáticos continentais.
Traga sua pesquisa para as discussões desta sessão, submetendo seu trabalho à SIL. Abstract: Lakes, streams & wetlands are widely ignored by scientists, the public, and decision-makers. Yet, like the smallest blood vessels of an organism’s body, these headwaters are critically important for the healthy functioning and structuring of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Climate change, land use intensification, and water withdrawals create a perfect storm for fragmenting and degrading those small waters—despite their importance to unique, endemic biota and for providing ecosystem services to humans (e.g., flood, drought, & disease mitigation, fisheries, wildlife viewing). It is critically important for scientists to engage not only other scientists—but the public as well. We must assist public school students and teachers in monitoring and assessing water quality and biota, including discussing the results with local decision-makers (private companies and local governments). Engaging school youths is a seed for citizen-science growth and effectiveness. Simplified quantitative field protocols and GoPro filming of reference & impaired streams provide pertinent and appropriate information for communicating with decision-makers. Engaging citizen groups regarding the human health and economic benefits of stream rehabilitation provides information on the ecosystem services offered by healthy streams and riparian communities. With the assistance of our coauthors, we will present global research examples of the values and threats to those aquatic ecosystems together with alternatives for communicating that information to the public and decision-makers.

Seagrass monitoring at Wave Break Island 1+2

Join our Ocean Connect marine science team on their fortnightly seagrass survey to actively monitor the status and trends in seagrass conditions around the Gold Coast.
This event will be held at Wave Break Island, we will be meeting at the Marine Parade to board a small vessel to travel to Wavebreak island seagrass meadows.
Seagrasses are a habitat forming species and they play a critical role in the equilibrium of coastal ecosystems. They provide many key ecosystem services, such as providing a nursery and habitat for animals, preventing coastal erosion and sequestering a large amount of carbon dioxide. 7 species occur in the Gold Coast region and cover an estimated 22% of the Broadwater.
It is crucial to monitor these change in order to be able to mitigate widespread loss . Ultimately by protecting the seagrass meadows the wider Gold Coast community will indirectly benefit from the sustained water quality in the Gold Coast Broadwater and surrounding region, ultimately, enhancing recreational fishing, marine tourism and providing the right framework for future generations to enjoy.
Participants will be trained in internationally standardized and recognized Seagrass-Watch training and will be briefed on seagrasses ecology, importance and threats before the session.
The ongoing monitoring is supported by the City of Gold Coast Catchment and Citizen Science Grant program.
This workshop is only suitable for adults over the 16 years of age in order to maintain scientific rigor and safety.
This is an outdoor event.

PhD Studentship: Safe listening in music venues: scalable technologies for citizen science and knowledge building

This studentship is funded by the NIHR (National Institute of Health and Care Research) Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre. The studentship will cover home University rates which includes a stipend of £18,622 per annum and tuition fees. UK/Home students only.
Project description: Loud sound has the capacity to excite and injure in equal measure. Through projects such as the World Health Organization’s ‘Make Listening Safe’ initiative, the Audio Engineering Society’s ‘Healthy Ears, Limited Annoyance (HeLa) programme, and the Night Time Industries Association’s ‘Listen for Life’ campaign, there is growing awareness of the need for the professional audio industry to take a pro-active approach to protect audience members’ hearing.
Join a dynamic, multi-disciplinary team, that includes lead contributors to some of the above-mentioned projects, to conduct groundbreaking PhD research into how live sound can be made simultaneously safer and better quality, to the benefit of audiences in Nottingham and beyond.
As a PhD candidate, you will be involved in setting up long-term sound monitoring systems in local venues, developing a smartphone app that will allow venue goers to contribute their experience of sound quality and hearing symptoms for research, and using data science techniques to improve our understanding of how the details of the sound exposure influence hearing-injury risk and perceived sound quality.
We seek highly motivated candidates with a first-class or upper 2.1 honours degree (or equivalent), or an MSc/MA, in audio engineering, acoustics, audiology, computer science, or a relevant scientific discipline. Research experience in hearing, psychology, or a related field will be advantageous, as will demonstrable skills in programming, data science, or app development.

O Congresso Ciência Cidadã é organizado com palestras públicas e painéis de discussão. O público em geral pode participar gratuitamente do congresso de ciências, das 10h às 17h, no Bio 360 Life Sciences Park, em Dudhakal. O Congresso Científico começará com uma palestra pública sobre o Kerala Bird Atlas, um projeto de ciência cidadã. Kerala Bird Atlas é um projeto científico para documentar o habitat e a extinção de pássaros. Em seguida, haverá uma palestra pública sobre o sistema comunitário de monitoramento meteorológico implementado em Wayanad. A próxima sessão do Congresso de Ciências será um painel de discussão sobre a rede social iNaturalist e seu trabalho e aprendizados.
The Great Garden Birdwatch

Action for Wildlife Jersey is inviting the community to partake in the 23rd annual Great Garden Birdwatch.
This cherished event, taking place on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th February, serves not only as an engaging activity for nature enthusiasts but also plays an important role in monitoring the health of our local bird populations.
The Great Garden Birdwatch has become a staple in Jersey’s environmental calendar over the past two decades, offering residents a unique opportunity to connect with nature while contributing to vital citizen science.
Those wishing to take part can use the Jersey Great Garden BirdWatch Survey Form 2024, available online or as a hard copy, to record their sightings. Results can be submitted via email to through Action for Wildlife Jersey’s Facebook page.
Vem Passarinhar Sampa – 2024

A primeira edição do Vem Passarinhar Sampa - 2024 acontece no sábado (20), no Parque Nascentes do Ribeirão Colônia, Jardim Novo Parelheiros, na Zona Sul. O projeto acontece todos com saídas gratuitas para observação da avifauna da capital nos parques municipais, com monitoria, empréstimo de binóculos.
A atividade promove a cidadania, por meio do uso e contato com os parques públicos, introduz as pessoas à observação de aves e à ciência cidadã, cria conexões com a natureza e reforça a importância da conservação de pássaros livres. Em 2023, os 12 eventos contaram com a participação total de mais de 670 pessoas, sendo que a edição realizada no mês de janeiro na RPPN Sítio Curucutu foi a mais concorrida, com 99 participantes.
Para quem não tem, o projeto disponibiliza binóculos aos participantes para que eles possam observar as aves. Além disso, são apresentadas ferramentas gratuitas para que os voluntários possam contribuir com registros para compor o Inventário da Fauna Silvestre do Município de São Paulo. Crianças acompanhadas de seus responsáveis também são bem-vindas. Outra ferramenta utilizada durante a programaçãoi é a realização de listas no eBird (aplicativo contendo um banco de dados on-line de observações de aves fornecendo dados em tempo real sobre a distribuição e a abundância de aves).
Para participar do evento basta preencher o formulário: Inscrição 20/01 - Vem Passarinhar Sampa, que também está disponível nos perfis do Instagram da @faunasvma ou da @savebrasil. Depois basta se cadastrar pelo aplicativo e-Bird e inserir quais foram as aves identificadas. O registro pode ser feito ao ver ou ouvir os pássaros, sem a necessidade de um número mínimo de espécies ou fotos. Com o intuito de facilitar o acesso dos participantes, é oferecido transporte gratuito de van ida e volta (sujeito à lotação), partindo sempre de alguma estação de transporte público.
A recomendação durante o passeio é usar calça comprida, calçado fechado, chapéu ou boné, protetor solar e levar uma capa de chuva. Pode levar também algum lanche para o piquenique colaborativo que é feito ao final de cada edição.

"Accelerating Climate Action through Citizen Science: Role of COP 28 and Beyond,” is organized by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), U.S. Department of State and New Indian Model School (NIMS), Dubai. Ocean health and environmental education experts and alumni educators of “Project Ocean Matters” will map the nexus between oceans and climate change; the role of citizen science tools such as the “Global Learning and Observation to Benefit the Environment” (GLOBE), and the “Microplastic Monitoring Protocol Trial” (MMPT). A mock COP by students of NIMS, Dubai will highlight the role of youth and educational institutions in accelerating Climate Action.
