Navigating Platforms for Participatory Sciences

No matter where you are in your project’s lifecycle and whether you are on a custom or shared platform, this conversation with platform developers will give you insights, ideas, or inspiration for your project’s next steps.
In this webinar, we walk you through some key considerations for choosing the right platform and hear from the six most commonly used web platforms for data collection/classification supporting participatory science projects in North America: CitSci.org; Zooniverse; FieldScope; Anecdata; iNaturalist; and GLOBE Observer. While we spend some time on platform features and updates, we will focus our program on a discussion of the kinds of research and participant experiences best supported by each.
Conference: Environmental citizen science in conflict zones for accountability and empowerment

Join us online or in Copenhagen on October 24th as we explore the potential role of environmental citizen science in areas affected by armed conflicts. This event will be a multidisciplinary discussion on the role of citizen-generated data and citizen science in environmental monitoring within conflict zones, with a particular focus on Ukraine after and during the Russian full-scale invasion. We will bring together perspectives from academic institutions, civil society organisations, policymakers, and Ukrainian students to explore the legal and social dimensions of participatory research in this context.
Join us for an engaging afternoon of discussion, collaboration, and knowledge-sharing. This conference is open to all, free of charge and will be held in person in Copenhagen. However, recognising the dire situation and ongoing travel restrictions affecting Ukraine, we are also offering the possibility for online participation to ensure everyone can join, regardless of location or circumstance.
With the special collaboration of the keynote speakers: Pier Carlo Sandei (Senior Programme Officer at UNEP); Jan Ortgies, Head of Legal at The Register of Damage for Ukraine (Council of Europe); and Dr. Ivan Rusev, Head of research department at National Nature Park Tuzlivski lymany (Ukraine).
Webinar Series: Teaching with EMERGE & GLOBE Mission Mosquito

This free two-part webinar is designed for educators who want to bring coding and citizen science to their learners.
The series bridges GLOBE Mission Mosquito—a NASA-supported program where students and community members collect environmental data—with EMERGE, a Florida-based but widely adaptable project that turns those data into insights about mosquito-borne disease risk.
Session 1 (Sept 17 at 6 PM ET): Introduction to EMERGE and GLOBE. You’ll learn how students can collect mosquito habitat and land cover data with the free GLOBE Observer app, then complete a guided coding assignment to visualize those observations on maps and explore connections with NASA satellite data. Very friendly environment for people who haven't coded before!
Session 2 (Sept 24 at 6 PM ET): We’ll regroup to review the coding assignment—troubleshoot issues, share sample outputs, and discuss strategies for adapting the lesson in classrooms, afterschool programs, and libraries.

Web Analytics 101 for Citizen Science Project Teams

Web analytics is the process of collecting and analyzing data to reveal visitor traffic and engagement patterns on webpages. These tools and the insights they reveal can be invaluable for diagnosing issues and improving operations of citizen science projects. But what tools are available, and how does a busy citizen science team make best use of them?
This event will introduce some of the free web analytics tools and how to use them to assess and improve citizen science project operations.
First, we will hear from members of the NASA Office of Communications. They will ground our conversation in a discussion of key performance indicators - both what they are and the metrics you can use to track them. Both ideal cases and realistic scenarios will be addressed. Next, Cliff Johnson from the Zooniverse platform will share the data that Zooniverse can provide to projects hosted there. Finally, we will hear from SciStarter and the tools and dashboards they provide to assist affiliated projects in better understanding patterns of users and use.
As always, we will save time for your questions.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming many fields, but its potential to revolutionise citizen science remains underexplored. Join the ECSA Citizen Science and Open Science working group on 19 February, 12:00 - 13:30 CET for a webinar exploring critical issues around data anonymisation and privacy in large-scale data sharing, and examine how AI can enhance citizen engagement, democratise science, and foster innovative approaches to data management, collection, and analysis.
A key focus will be on integrating citizen science data into AI systems to address challenges and risks, offering a new perspective on co-creating AI through the amai! programme in support of sustainable development and open science.
Global Survey on Opportunities for Citizen Data in addressing Infectious Diseases

With the support of the Wellcome Trust, the Global Partnership is undertaking a scoping study in order to institutionalize the production and use of citizen data in the response to and prevention of environmentally sensitive infectious diseases, including cholera, schistosomiasis, leishmaniasis, and arboviruses (including dengue and yellow fever).
This survey is intended to collect insights to better understand the opportunities, challenges, and skills-building needs required to institutionalize citizen data for the prevention and response to infectious disease, and the policy priorities thereafter. We also seek to identify organizations that have experience in this area of work as potential partners.
More specifically, this survey aims to:
Identify producers of inclusive data and citizen data
Understand the needs of actors in the infectious disease field that can benefit from inclusive data and citizen data
Identify skills and capacity needs for citizen data use.
This survey is open to anyone who is carrying out work on citizen data, inclusive data or infectious diseases. We are particularly interested to hear from: grassroot organizations, governments, non-governmental organizations, academia, research organizations, networks and communities of practice.
Definitions
Citizen data
Citizen data is defined as data produced by and with sufficient engagement of citizens, communities, civil society organizations and other actors at the design and/or collection stages of the data process, with the aim to inform decision making, responding to specific needs of a community, supplementing existing data from the National Statistical Systems at various levels, or filling data gaps. By sufficient engagement, we mean citizens partner equally with producers of data to share planning and decision-making responsibilities or citizens actively control the entire data process, showcasing collective agency.
Inclusive data
Inclusive data refers to data that is representative, especially of those who are often marginalized, ensuring that data are collected for all people, regardless of their location, ethnicity, gender, age, disability, or other characteristics. Inclusive data goes beyond data disaggregation, looking across the data value chain - from data collection, analysis through to its dissemination uptake and use.
Infectious disease
In this context, we refer to infectious diseases as illnesses caused by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria, or parasites whose spread, transmission, or severity is influenced by changes in environmental factors and climate patterns. Examples of diseases include cholera, schistosomiasis, leishmaniasis, and arboviruses, such as dengue and yellow fever.
This survey will take ~10 minutes to complete. Your responses are treated with confidentiality and will be reported as part of aggregate quantitative and qualitative analysis.

Join the ECS project at the online event “ECS project showcase: Sharing insights and facilitating dialogue in citizen science” taking place on 27 February 2024, 12-13:30h CET. We will share the project’s insights on the topics of data practices in citizen science, impact evaluation, the ECS Academy (training and capacity building) and policy priorities of ECS in four input presentations. The second part of the event is interactive: engage in conversation with other participants around these topics in breakout rooms, facilitating the exchange of experiences and knowledge.
