Global Survey on Opportunities for Citizen Data in addressing Infectious Diseases

Online

De 20 Nov até 30 Mar, 2024
With the support of the Wellcome Trust, the Global Partnership is undertaking a scoping study in order to institutionalize the production and use of citizen data in the response to and prevention of environmentally sensitive infectious diseases, including cholera, schistosomiasis, leishmaniasis, and arboviruses (including dengue and yellow fever). This survey is intended to collect insights to better understand the opportunities, challenges, and skills-building needs required to institutionalize citizen data for the prevention and response to infectious disease, and the policy priorities thereafter. We also seek to identify organizations that have experience in this area of work as potential partners. More specifically, this survey aims to: Identify producers of inclusive data and citizen data Understand the needs of actors in the infectious disease field that can benefit from inclusive data and citizen data Identify skills and capacity needs for citizen data use. This survey is open to anyone who is carrying out work on citizen data, inclusive data or infectious diseases. We are particularly interested to hear from: grassroot organizations, governments, non-governmental organizations, academia, research organizations, networks and communities of practice. Definitions Citizen data Citizen data is defined as data produced by and with sufficient engagement of citizens, communities, civil society organizations and other actors at the design and/or collection stages of the data process, with the aim to inform decision making, responding to specific needs of a community, supplementing existing data from the National Statistical Systems at various levels, or filling data gaps. By sufficient engagement, we mean citizens partner equally with producers of data to share planning and decision-making responsibilities or citizens actively control the entire data process, showcasing collective agency. Inclusive data Inclusive data refers to data that is representative, especially of those who are often marginalized, ensuring that data are collected for all people, regardless of their location, ethnicity, gender, age, disability, or other characteristics. Inclusive data goes beyond data disaggregation, looking across the data value chain - from data collection, analysis through to its dissemination uptake and use. Infectious disease In this context, we refer to infectious diseases as illnesses caused by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria, or parasites whose spread, transmission, or severity is influenced by changes in environmental factors and climate patterns. Examples of diseases include cholera, schistosomiasis, leishmaniasis, and arboviruses, such as dengue and yellow fever. This survey will take ~10 minutes to complete. Your responses are treated with confidentiality and will be reported as part of aggregate quantitative and qualitative analysis.

3ª edição do Alien CSI Bioblitz

Europa

De 24 Mai até 26 Mai, 2024
Alien CSI Bioblitz: a citizen science project to engage society in invasive species monitoring. WHY THIS EVENT There is no sign of saturation in accumulation of alien species (AS) introductions worldwide, while the rate of spread for some AS seems to be increasing. Particular attention must be dedicated to Invasive Alien Species (IAS), i.e., AS that harm biodiversity and ecosystem services, or have a negative impact on the economy or human health. Managing biological invasions depends on accurate, detailed and up-to-date information on occurrences, distribution, pathways and impact of IAS at varying spatial scales across Europe and indeed globally. The challenges of gathering information on AS are recognized, but recent developments in citizen science (CS), that is, the involvement of citizens in data collection or analysis for research projects, provide an opportunity to improve data flow and knowledge on AS. Further, it ensures effective and high quality societal engagement with the issue of IAS. TAKE ACTION Choose your region and check how to collaborate and help scientists detect IAS in your area!

PhD Studentship: Safe listening in music venues: scalable technologies for citizen science and knowledge building

Nottingham, UK

De 19 Mar até 01 Abr, 2024
This studentship is funded by the NIHR (National Institute of Health and Care Research) Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre. The studentship will cover home University rates which includes a stipend of £18,622 per annum and tuition fees. UK/Home students only. Project description: Loud sound has the capacity to excite and injure in equal measure. Through projects such as the World Health Organization’s ‘Make Listening Safe’ initiative, the Audio Engineering Society’s ‘Healthy Ears, Limited Annoyance (HeLa) programme, and the Night Time Industries Association’s ‘Listen for Life’ campaign, there is growing awareness of the need for the professional audio industry to take a pro-active approach to protect audience members’ hearing. Join a dynamic, multi-disciplinary team, that includes lead contributors to some of the above-mentioned projects, to conduct groundbreaking PhD research into how live sound can be made simultaneously safer and better quality, to the benefit of audiences in Nottingham and beyond. As a PhD candidate, you will be involved in setting up long-term sound monitoring systems in local venues, developing a smartphone app that will allow venue goers to contribute their experience of sound quality and hearing symptoms for research, and using data science techniques to improve our understanding of how the details of the sound exposure influence hearing-injury risk and perceived sound quality. We seek highly motivated candidates with a first-class or upper 2.1 honours degree (or equivalent), or an MSc/MA, in audio engineering, acoustics, audiology, computer science, or a relevant scientific discipline. Research experience in hearing, psychology, or a related field will be advantageous, as will demonstrable skills in programming, data science, or app development.
