Seagrass monitoring at Wave Break Island 1+2
Wave Break Island (Australia)De 22 Mar até 22 Mar, 2024
Join our Ocean Connect marine science team on their fortnightly seagrass survey to actively monitor the status and trends in seagrass conditions around the Gold Coast.
This event will be held at Wave Break Island, we will be meeting at the Marine Parade to board a small vessel to travel to Wavebreak island seagrass meadows.
Seagrasses are a habitat forming species and they play a critical role in the equilibrium of coastal ecosystems. They provide many key ecosystem services, such as providing a nursery and habitat for animals, preventing coastal erosion and sequestering a large amount of carbon dioxide. 7 species occur in the Gold Coast region and cover an estimated 22% of the Broadwater.
It is crucial to monitor these change in order to be able to mitigate widespread loss . Ultimately by protecting the seagrass meadows the wider Gold Coast community will indirectly benefit from the sustained water quality in the Gold Coast Broadwater and surrounding region, ultimately, enhancing recreational fishing, marine tourism and providing the right framework for future generations to enjoy.
Participants will be trained in internationally standardized and recognized Seagrass-Watch training and will be briefed on seagrasses ecology, importance and threats before the session.
The ongoing monitoring is supported by the City of Gold Coast Catchment and Citizen Science Grant program.
This workshop is only suitable for adults over the 16 years of age in order to maintain scientific rigor and safety.
This is an outdoor event.
Everyone attending must register as spots are limited.

The Great Garden Birdwatch has become a staple in Jersey’s environmental calendar over the past two decades, offering residents a unique opportunity to connect with nature while contributing to vital citizen science.
Those wishing to take part can use the Jersey Great Garden BirdWatch Survey Form 2024, available online or as a hard copy, to record their sightings. Results can be submitted via email to through Action for Wildlife Jersey’s Facebook page.
Great Grevy’s Rally Event
Nanyuki, KenyaDe 27 Jan até 28 Jan, 2024
The Great Grevy's Rally is a census of the population, which will aid Grevy's Zebra Trust and their conservation partners in safeguarding the future of the Grevy's zebra.
Citizen scientists will join conservationists, local community members and land owners to survey almost the entire range of Grevy Zebra habitat. Teams of citizen scientists will go out into the wilderness and with GPS enabled camera to capture the right flank of every individual Grevy's zebra observed during the two days. With this information the Gravy's Zebra Trust can identify all individuals in the population and gain vital information about the species population - information that well help Kenya save it's iconic species!
Open call: STARTS Prize Africa
AfricaDe 18 Jan até 01 Mar, 2024
Science, Technology, and the ARTS (STARTS) is inviting African artists, companies, scientists, researchers and businesses to participate in the first edition of its Prize Africa competition in Linz, Austria. The focus is on people and projects that contribute to mastering the social, ecological and economic challenges.
The STARTS Prize Africa will highlight and award regional best practices in the field through the launch of the African edition of the well-known STARTS Prize. The STARTS Prize has been a major contributor in building the foundations of a community interlinking artists, companies, scientists, researchers and businesses. This movement will now be enhanced with the first edition of the STARTS Prize Africa. The STARTS Prize Africa is not restricted to a particular genre or field. The competition is open to all forms of creative practices, be it music, performing and visual arts, film, animation, gaming, photography, VR and XR, design, fashion, architecture, journalism, art-science collaborations, citizen science initiatives, human-centred AI projects, social software, and many more.

Collaborative design of educational and urban spaces
Coimbra (Portugal)11:00
This is the 4th workshop organised by CC.EDU | Working Group on Citizen Science and Education under the Series 'Building Educational Communities'
Co-CiPhil: Co-creating Environmental Citizen Science Capacity in the Philippines
Cagayan de Oro City (Filipinas)De 06 Nov até 17 Nov, 2023
The MSU – Iligan Institute of Technology is currently hosting the Co-CiPhil: Co-creating Environmental Citizen Science Capacity in the Philippines VLIR-UOS International Training Program (ITP) Workshop 2, taking place from November 6 to 17, 2023, at the Chali Beach Resort and Conference Center in Cagayan de Oro City. This two-week workshop, attended by 50 scholars representing various local and international state universities, as well as local government units and medical institutions, is part of a series of workshops on quantitative and qualitative methodologies in citizen science research. These workshops are collaboratively organized by Universiteit Hasselt (UHasselt), a prestigious Flemish university in Belgium, MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), and the Visayas State University (VSU). The primary objective of the International Training Program (ITP) is to systematically incorporate global perspectives, fostering a supportive, inclusive, and networked learning environment. Through these programs, professionals enhance their transversal skills and gain state-of-the-art knowledge in sustainable development, transforming into globally aware citizens capable of driving positive change within their networks.
During the first week, the workshop delves into environmental monitoring and management (Course 3) under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Natalie Beenaerts from UHasselt. Emphasis is placed on the significance of co-creating citizen science or community-based research, with a specific focus on empowering women and other marginalized groups. In the subsequent week, Prof. Dr. Thomas Neyens from UHasselt leads discussions on establishing robust study designs, particularly in the context of observational studies and citizen science initiatives. The curriculum covers the foundational aspects of statistical study design, while also addressing practical considerations in less-than-ideal settings.
